"the style reminds me of, this character reminds me of"...

Posted by P-cate - January 17th, 2016

THAT'S NOT A FUCKING COMPLIMENT DUDE. Stop making that kind of comments, it's not really something positive to say.

¿why?

The artist has worked hard in their style to archieve something relatively unique. The looks should instantly make the viewer know that this particular art style belongs to this particular artist. With characters, the character creator tries their best to make something that's not "like" other character.

Although nothing's original, but a mix of many things, if you say these comments you're basically throwing all that hard work, to make something somewhat original, away.

Comments

One reason I don't comment very much anymore, I sound like a broken record and most people don't want to hear the same shit, over and over again.

i mean, why a broken record?, you can always comment "this is really cool/amazing" idek, it's always a nice thing to read/hear.

I get "That looks like Scott Pilgrim" a lot.

damn man

I just looked your art, at first glance it doesnt look like sp at all lmao, crazy fans trying to see what they like.

I get where your coming from.

It can be really frustrating sometimes like how you mentioned in your comment you try your best to make something original and then all that bloody hard work and then someone comments on how you MUST have based on -insert title here-.Now I clearly understand your standpoint on originality.Every respectful artist that wants to master his work normally strives for original ideas and concepts. And that takes a lot of effort especially in a world where a huge amount of original content has already been made and most things that come out now are normally reshaped existing ideas from the past. And that's why there will be at least someone to call you out that a certain part of your work reminds them of something. But I think you simply just need to chill out and not let comments like these bother you, since unfortunately there will never be a stop to them.Even ideas appear as completely original at first take some time only for someone to point out that they look similar to something seen before.

Think of it this way:In a way you have made the certain person to associate your work with something they like. They recognize a certain title that they enjoy in your work and they find the art piece even more awesome.A lot of comments like this are rarely with a negative intent,so I don't see why this shouldn't be considered a compliment.

That's my word on the subject.Keep making awesome work

With regards:A person who's work keeps getting compared to a lot of things, but mostly "Don't Starve"

if you say it like that, it's actually another way to see it. Thank you for commenting ^q^, i love long comments of people expressing their opinions. I used to ignore them a lot, but now i've been a little more anxious and jumpy to anger, maybe it's because of that. I always forget that many non-artistic people use to say things like that.

You are right, the best thing you can hope for is instant recognition whenever someone comes across of your work. A distinctive style is basically the most effective form of branding for any artist, but honestly it's a rare thing. I can only recall one artist whom I had that with recently.

I have that same thing. With animation for instance comes a certain type of minimalistic linework, in order to save time. It means the lines must be practical at all times. It also means i can see a lot of similarities in my linework and that of others. But slowly and gradually I get to develop my own style, mainly because I get sick of drawing pants the same way over and over again. So I change it up drastically and end up getting much better results. Changing all the different parts one at a time will give your work a more unique feel.

Don't feel offended when someone points out similarities. A certain unique style or technique can only be created once, everyone who comes after that with a similar style will forever stand in their shadow despite having no intent to mimic them. I know it might be frustrating, but It's the way of things.

I said that no style was original anymore, there's so many in the world you can't make something unique :c, i just wanted to rant though, about the fans who keep throwing comments like that when they don't really have to. Like, actually, i don't even know what to reply LMAO. like "thanks(wow my style looks like this style, idk what that means). Thepsychosheep gave a good point about that though, that people compare you to their favorite things. I guess i shouldnt expect much :s-
